The House That Watched the Sea by Luz Adriana Mirasol is a debut literary novel about inheritance, homecoming, and the stories we carry in our bones. When Malaya returns to her late grandmother's coastal home in the Philippines, she begins the slow work of restoration. However, the house offers no peace, revealing the memories of generations of women who lived, dreamed, and grieved within its walls.
The goal for this cover was to combine fine art and digital illustration while also taking inspiration from traditional Filipino art. This was done by using a work by Filipino painter Isidro Ancheta and layering digital illustrations heavily inspired by Filipino embroidery. The Illustrations are meant to depict a pattern of women and waves to reference the book's focus on the women who lived in this coastal home.
The title was set in Banaue for its hand-drawn style and Filipino inspiration. Proxima Nova Condensed was used as a secondary heading typeface for its blend of geometric and grotesk characteristics. Body type was set in Adobe Caslon Pro for its elegant, readable design and historical tone; Caslon was also used for headings in the book interior.
