The Color of Gravity by Amira Solis-James is a multidisciplinary nonfiction work exploring the historically overlooked contributions of women, queer people, and people of color in science.
The goal for this cover was to express an academic yet inspiring tone through the use of photography and digital editing while avoiding stereotypical "space" imagery. This was done by retouching, colorizing, and compositing historical photos from the Library of Congress to give these portraits a new and bolder life.
Headings were set in display font Cormorant Garamond Semibold Italic for its high contrast letterforms and to allude to the book's new perspective on historic events. The italic also references the tilted axis of many planetary bodies, further reinforcing the astrophysical topic in a subtle way. Body text uses Adobe Garamond Pro Regular and Italic for cohesiveness with the display type as well as overall readability.
The book mockup was created in Blender. Shading nodes and UV wrapping were used to place the book designs onto the mockup before final rendering.
